Hotchkiss sits on the north side of the North Fork Gunnison River. The North Fork, which joins downstream from the Black Canyon, is a tributary of the Gunnison River.
The Gunnison River is designated as Gold Medal Water from Crystal Dam to the North Fork. Streams and rivers are designated as Gold Medal Waters by the state wildlife commission because they provide outstanding angling opportunities for large trout.
Only 168 of 9,000+ miles of trout streams in Colorado are designated as Gold Medal Water.
Hotchkiss is home to Colorado State University’s Rogers Mesa facility, which is awaiting a Region 10 grant for a multi-use program that would include a combination of a farm incubator, educational programming, and commercial farming.
The area has a temperate climate that has historically been a center of organic fruit growing in the USA.
